Mark Walker and Milly’s Loft join to participate in the Dubai One Loft Pigeon Race or World Championship Pigeon Sprint Racing.
Mark has spent a couple of years co-breeding with Milly’s Loft, one of the best OLR breeders’ colonies in the UK. Mark Walkers, owner of Walkers Racing Pigeons, is home to one of the world’s most impressive collections of racing pigeons from famous breeders A & B Leideman.
Milly’s Loft, run by Mick and Wendy Mellor, is renowned for their expertise in One Loft Racing (OLR). Mick Mellor, who grew up in Crewe—a hub for pigeon racing in the late 50s—was influenced by the competitive environment and local enthusiasts like the Walton family. His passion for pigeon racing was kindled by these early experiences and his father’s dedication to the sport.
The Beginning
Mick’s father, Corky Mellor, was a dedicated pigeon fancier who passed his enthusiasm on to Mick and Wendy. Wendy recalls Corky’s fervor for pigeons from a young age, a passion that persisted until his untimely death at 50. Following in his father’s footsteps, Mick displayed early signs of independence and determination in the sport, a trait that would serve him well in his future endeavors.
Mick’s Early Days
At 14, Mick saved £5 to buy a pigeon, defying his father’s initial reluctance. His perseverance paid off when his pigeon, “Lone Ranger,” performed admirably in a National race despite challenging conditions. Although marred by the theft of the pigeon, this early success marked the beginning of Mick’s journey in pigeon racing.
Evolution of Milly’s Loft
Milly’s Loft has evolved significantly over the years. The lofts are uniquely designed, with nest boxes at the front and floor-level panels for bird entry. The main stock loft houses 17 pairs in individual pens to ensure precise breeding. Mick’s approach to breeding involves selecting top breeders and maintaining optimal conditions, resulting in a robust and healthy lineage.
Breeding and Racing Strategy
Mick’s meticulous breeding strategy includes a focus on OLR. He carefully selects and breeds pigeons with proven track records in OLR, investing in top bloodlines from renowned sources. The loft has a history of success, with notable achievements in races worldwide, amassing over £181,400 in winnings. Mick’s attention to detail extends to training, where he acclimates young birds to race conditions and entry systems, ensuring they are well-prepared for competition.
Recent Successes
Mick’s dedication to OLR has yielded impressive results, particularly in the Victoria Falls races. His birds consistently rank high, demonstrating the effectiveness of his breeding and training methods. Locally, the Mellors compete in the South West Fed and the Crewe West End club, maintaining a strong presence and securing numerous wins.
